Here's how the Manual describes the game:
"PHOENIX is an exciting new space game, with special audioand visual effects, challenging the skills of the most experienced player.Fascinating visual graphics and extraterrestrial sounds add to the intensity ofthis game."
The game's a Space Invaders / Galaxian variant. Youmove left and right at the bottom of the screen shooting Robot Birds and dodgingbullets (robot bird guano?). The added wrinkle is that you have a shield button.The game has 3 distinct sections. First you shoot down 2 waves of small divingbirds, then you destroy 2 waves of eggs which metamorphose into large birds (ifyou let 'em). Finally you face the mothership (yes a boss) which can only beshot down by blasting a hole through its shields. Lots of fun.
The sound onthis game is rather good for its time. It has an intro song and the chirpingsounds as you blast the giant birds are rather cool. The blaring sirens as youattack the mothership area also quite pleasing.
If anyone has a set of control panels for the taito cocktailversion of phoenix for sale then let me know. I'm also looking for theunder-glass instruction cards. I'd even be interested in a scan of photograph ofthese.
